Every year, Martine, Nicole, Jean-Louis & I enjoy a superb lunch or dinner at the Lycee Hotelier’s educational restaurant called:  Le restaurant pédagogique. This culinary college is located in the village of Souillac and enjoying a meal at the school would be a great ‘souvenir’ for any visitor to the region.

Dedicated young students are trained in all the culinary arts and the fine points of both kitchen and front of house service. Throughout the school year the college operates an educational restaurant on campus offering to the general public both lunch and dinner services. In addition to the students normal curriculum; they spend two weeks cooking in the restaurant kitchen, then two weeks as servers with this training schedule repeated throughout their school year.

The restaurant serves fixed menus and offers accompanying cocktails & wines that showcase the outstanding regional offerings of the Quercy-Périgord.

Average prices? Four-course lunch: 18.00€, Five-course dinner: 30.00€

Specialty cocktails: 2.50€

Excellent regional wines:12.00€ bottle

Jean-Louis looks upon the starter with anticipation:

Aumônière d’escargots aux girolles et cèpes

This is a culinary experience that is affordable, fun and guaranteed to please your palate. So, please put it down on your Dordogne River Valley… BUCKET LIST!

Nestled in the very heart of the Dordogne River Valley, Le Sud is our top recommendation for visitors wanting high quality, self-catered, accommodations at very affordable prices.

Le Sud is a 19th century farmhouse which is centrally located to some of France’s most beautiful medieval villages and extraordinary attractions. Situated just above the Dordogne River, this wonderful property’s beautifully maintained gardens, meadows and comfortable accommodations make it the ideal base-camp for any recreational adventures into our region.

For international travelers from Canada and US we recommend, if possible, avoiding both the crowds and higher prices associated with the peak season:  14 July through 31 August. All stays at Le Sud are Saturday to Saturday and off-peak (31 March – 1 June & 29 September – 2 November 2012) weekly rates start at only: 460 Euros. Hey, for two couples sharing a cottage that’s as little as 17€ per person, per night … C’est Incroyable!

Arranged around a central courtyard this tranquil compound has a total of four rental units plus the owner’s residence. Le Jasmin, Le Romarin, and La Petite Grange each have two bedrooms (1 dbl / 1 twin bedded) and La Lavande has 3 bedrooms (2 dbl’s / 1 twin bedded).

Each ‘cottage’ has been sympathetically restored to a high standard with many exposed beams and original stone walls that provide holiday accommodations with comfort, charm and character.

Adjacent to Le Sud’s central courtyard are also the communal barbeque complex, beautiful salt water swimming pool and a pétanque (french bowling) pitch!
